Father-of-three Andy Waite, 42, who owns a bodyshop near Newmarket, Suffolk, bought the Mk1 1.5 litre Golf for £50, nearly £900,000 less than the price of the Bugatti, the world's most expensive car. But after he modified the car to include a custom-built turbocharged engine, the Golf can hit speeds of 0-60mph in just 2.36 seconds - a tenth faster than the Veyron.

Last week, Mat Radman, my captive automotive engineer and coordinator of the Aerolithe project, had a meeting with his team to determine if the car would be ready to journey to Pebble Beach this summer to attend the Concours d'Elegance. The consensus was that the Bugatti would be ready no matter what challenges lay ahead over the next few months. I must admit feeling a slight dread concerning this proclamation. I've been here before and, in many cases, that optimism has been met with difficulties and drawbacks that have defeated deadlines, depressing.

Brent Hajek already has a passion for living, but that passion burns brightest when he’s talking about racing, racing history and his love of all things Ford. Fortunately for fans of Ford, Hajek’s passion has prompted the Ames, Oklahoma native and owner of Hajek Motorsports to pursue his own place in racing history. Hajek Motorsports has been around since the 1970s, and over the years Brent Hajek has amassed an impressive collection of historical race cars, predominantly Ford, that once carried some of the biggest names in racing.

Only three weeks before the much awaited 1000 Km of Spa, Le Mans Series will take over the Bugatti racetrack for a two day test session. As of today, 12 cars are entered for this session which was scheduled a little bit too late. In spite of this, it is a perfect opportunity for teams such as Pescarolo Sport, Signature Plus, the Speedy Racing team Sebah or Luc Alphand Aventures to find their bearings before the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

While the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 led the way with over-top looks and unnecessary power and performance upon its 2005 debut, the 1001 hp monster is re-setting the bar once again with the upcoming unveiling of the Veyron Centenaire “Sang Noir”.

You want to see depreciation? You thought your car was getting hit hard by the economic maelstrom? When you see what its like to own a hypercar like the Veyron, you’ll thank the stars that you can only afford a Ford Taurus and that the depreciation is only $5-10,000 per year.

The 1937 Bugatti 57SC Atalante Coupe was listed for $4,500,000 and did not sell. I wonder how the Bonhams auction will go in February. The other car we listed below, the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Roadster was listed for $4,900,000 and went unsold as well.

2008 saw the car market go in the tank and efficiency become the new buzzword, but that didn’t stop us from testing a whole slew of cars capable of distorting the senses with a heavy prod of the throttle pedal.

These are not your ordinary Lamborghinis or Aston Martins. A couple of these accidents involve cars worth more than $10 million. Be prepared to cry.

Maybe there really is an economic slowdown if companies like Bugatti are going budget-minded. Well, budget minded for the ultra-exclusive supercar maker means stooping to the level of Rolls-Royce. Bugatti, in cooperation with its sister brand Bentley, may be teaming up to create a sedan knock-out punch to Bentley’s direct competitor.
