Ford is supplying experimental plug-in Escape hybrid SUVs, for a study of user behaviour, battery technology and grid infrastructure over the next three years in the United States and Canada in a partnership with Hydro-Quebec and the Electric Power Research Institute. The prototype uses a plug-in lithium-ion battery, unlike the nickel-metal hydride battery in the current Escape hybrid, but doesn't provide completely gas-free motoring, even after being fully charged.

Twin Cities nonprofit groups and government officials are working with Ford Motor Co. and Xcel Energy to bring electric cars to the area. Ford is hoping to get federal stimulus money for the project, and a proposal in Minneapolis and St. Paul could be one of 34 projects to receive funding. As part of the proposal, local governments would field a fleet of 66 electric or hybrid cars in Minneapolis and St. Paul by the end of next year. Xcel Energy would set up special stations where the cars could charge up. That could include two solar-powered stations.

We live in interesting times. The drama of the American auto industry has been unfolding for the past few years. Just when we thought things were looking up, another shoe has dropped. It was the new CAFÉ standards in late 2007. In 2008 it was the record gas prices and late in the year the complete collapse of the economy. 2009 has brought a new chapter in the novel with GM and Chrysler going to the trough for government bailouts in the billions.

The Ford Transit Connect looks completely European. Its look has “French florist” or “British electrician” written all over it. Yet, Ford is bringing the Transit Connect to America. And so far, the response from the media and consumers has been overwhelmingly positive. J. Mays, the Ford group design chief, told me on Wednesday that there’s something honest about its design. It’s not trying too hard to be anything. As of now, when the Transit Connect arrives in the United States this summer, it will be sold as a commercial vehicle, most likely for small businesses.

Ford Motor Co. has demonstrated a good sense of timing with its effort to restructure its debt. On Monday, Ford said it is spending $2.4 billion and using 468 million shares of stock to repurchase and reduce its automotive debt by $9.9 billion, an achievement that the company said will help it survive without federal loans. "I think Ford has acted opportunistically and they timed it successfully," said Kip Penniman, a credit analyst at KDP Investment Advisors Inc.
