Four officers from the Redlands Police Department will travel to Redlands' sister city to share strategies and techniques through the Redlands Sister Cities Association. "We have four officers who are going to our sister city in Hino, Japan, which is about an hour and a half from Tokyo," said Roy Cencirulo, former president of Redlands Sister City Association. "We have had a sister city relationship with Hino for about 40 years. Twelve years ago, we started doing student exchanges and in 2001, we did our first firefighter exchange.

Hino Motors Ltd. (7205.TO) said Monday that it fell into the red in the fiscal year ended March, as it suffered from stagnant domestic and overseas truck demand as well as a drop in output at parent Toyota Motor Corp. The truck maker, in which Toyota holds a 50.1% stake, posted a net loss of Y61.84 billion in the fiscal year ended March 31, a sharp drop from a net profit of Y22.18 billion a year earlier. The annual loss was the company's first on a net basis since the fiscal year ended March 2001.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and two Toyota Motor Corp. subsidiaries on Monday posted weaker results in the latest fiscal year, reinforcing expectations that major Japanese auto makers are about to report large losses. Mitsubishi, Hino Motors Ltd. and Daihatsu Motor Co. are among the first Japanese vehicle makers to report results for the Japanese fiscal year that ended March 31. Analysts say that the results will likely serve as an indicator for their larger domestic rivals.

Ten full-time employees at the Hino Motors facility in Williamstown are now out of work. The layoffs happened Friday at the commercial truck manufacturing plant that employs about 100 people. Hino officials say the struggling transportation sector led to the cutbacks. “Obviously, this is a terribly challenging time for the commercial and passenger vehicle industries, OEMs and suppliers alike,” said Sandy Ring, Hino’s General Manager of External and Legal Affairs. “We have done everything possible to avoid layoffs, but our current staffing and capacity exceed market demand.”
