The undisputed champion of hydrogen fuel cell SUVs at the Nurburgring has been crowned: the Nissan X-Trail FCV. The winning time: 11:58. Of course, it's the winning time because it's the only time -- a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has never ran the 'Ring before.

BMW X5 ActiveHybrid prototype

Photographers have managed to snap some pictures of BMW’s upcoming X5 hybrid, all within days of spotting prototypes of the X6 hybrid in California’s Death Valley. The images depict an X5 with an oversized bulge located on the bonnet, likely to be containing test equipment for the new two-mode hybrid system the car will feature. A similar bump was seen on the previous X6 hybrid prototype but was significantly smaller, signifying that it could be closer to production than its X5 sibling.

Jetta TDI = hotcakes, Tiguan, not so much

Posted on Jul 15 2008 1:20 AM by Asif

Despite the fact that Volkswagen's 2009 Jetta TDI sedan and Sportwagen cost more and have yet to get here, plus fuel prices in the five-dollar range, customer desire for the sparkless VeeDubs is running high. Perhaps buyers don't realize that these ain't the old Rabbit rattlers that cost three cents to run and would rack up a billion miles with five tanks of fuel.

Chevy Volt to make an appearance in Transformers sequel?

Posted on Jul 09 2008 2:33 AM by Asif

Just how important is the Chevy Volt for ailing General Motors? Obviously, that's a rhetorical as GM is making it out to be the second coming of the horseless carriage. The money being invested into the latest battery technology and the sophisticated platform which carries it proves that the General is placing massive wager on plug-in electric cars. And you can bet that it will be hyping the Hell out of them too.

GM shrinks Volt's gas tank, range drops from 600 to 360 miles

Posted on Jul 09 2008 2:01 AM by Asif

One of the many things General Motors boasted about when it unveiled the Volt concept at the Detroit Auto Show in 2007 was its 600-mile range. This was achieved partially by the battery pack, which could sustain a (theoretical) charge allowing the Volt to run for 40 miles without reverting to the gasoline engine/generator, as well as a 12-gallon fuel tank.

With crisis looming, GM may unveil Volt for 100th anniversary

Sales of General Motors' one time cash cow, full-size trucks, are declining faster than the value of the US dollar, but with a birthday coming, GM still wants something to celebrate. This September, the world's largest automaker will be celebrating its centennial under a financial pall unlike any it has faced since its early days under Billy Durant.

GM, Ford exporting $2 billion in vehicles, parts to China

Posted on Jun 18 2008 2:00 AM by Asif

American automotive companies have been doing rather well for themselves these last few years in China. Still, the majority of manufacturing those vehicles is done in China using locally sourced parts. For this reason, the Chinese government has been facing pressure to ink more deals with American companies for the export of goods there, which is apparently now beginning to take place. Ford, for instance, has announced that it will be sending 30,000 complete vehicles (no word on which ones) to China along with other various auto parts. General Motors has also signed on with about $1 billion in vehicles and parts for export to China.

Bob Lutz on Volt: "no reasonable doubt... this is going to work"

Posted on Jun 18 2008 1:55 AM by Asif

Bob Lutz has come out and said it again: "I would say there's almost no reasonable doubt in our minds anymore that this is going to work." And that isn't just that the Chevy Volt will work -- it's that it will work on time and as promised. In spite of the difficulties GM has had getting Volt technology up-to-speed within its timeframes, the man upstairs is apparently as confident as ever.

U.S. DOE announces $30 million plug-in hybrid fund

Posted on Jun 13 2008 2:41 AM by Asif

The timing of the U.S. Department of Energy’s $30 million plug-in hybrid funding announcement indicates it has been in the works for quite some time, but coming right on the heels of Ford’s call for a government commitment to the technology, it looks like the Blue Oval got just what it wanted. The funds will be available over a three-year period from 2008-2011 for the development of technology in key areas for future plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

It's red, it's sleek, it's the Scorpion from the newly formed Ronn Motor Company. It's main features include the fact that it goes from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and gets 40 mpg. So what's so special about that? How about the fact that it's also a hydrogen burning hybrid?

Toyota is introducing a plug-in hybrid with next-generation lithium-ion batteries in Japan, the U.S. and Europe by 2010, under a widespread strategy to be green outlined today. The ecological gas-electric vehicles, which can be recharged from a home electrical outlet, will target leasing customers, Toyota Motor Corp. said. Such plug-in hybrids can run longer as an electric vehicle than regular hybrids, and are cleaner.
