A midsize Hyundai Avante sedan adorned with ribbons and flowers drove slowly onto a vessel bound for Egypt at a shipyard in Ulsan yesterday. The vehicle was the one-millionth shipped by the Korean automaker to the African market. The first was the Pony, a passenger car sent to Liberia 33 years ago. Hyundai Motor shipped 207 vehicles to Africa that first year, and its exports to Africa have grown rapidly since then. The company’s exports to Africa exceeded 100,000 units in 2005; last year it shipped 160,603 vehicles to the region.

2009 is turning into the year of the gullwing. With Merc’s SLS supercar soon to arrive, we’ve already seen Arturo Alonso’s gorgeous old-school Panamerica concept, and now this, the retro Gullwing. It’s a faithful recreation of the original 1952 300SL from German company Gullwing GmbH, but updated with lots of shiny new oily bits underneath. Gullwing has ditched the 300SL’s 216bhp, 3.0-litre straight six in favour of Mercedes’ new 405bhp, 5.5-litre V8 driving the rear wheels through an automatic gearbox.

Hyundai Steel Co., South Korea’s biggest maker of construction steel, posted its biggest quarterly profit drop in three years after slashing production and prices as the global recession curbed demand from builders. Net income fell 62 percent to 51.5 billion won ($38 million) in the three months ended March 31, from 137.1 billion won a year earlier, the Incheon-based company said in a regulatory filing today. That beats the 31 billion won median profit estimate of 14 analysts compiled by Bloomberg.

CHENNAI: Beating the global downturn, carmakers Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) and Maruti Suzuki were able to penetrate the European markets with their compact hatchbacks last fiscal. These ruled the roost overseas as fuel-efficient and environment friendly models prevailed in deference to oil guzzling large sedans. In the A2 small compact car segment, Hyundai clocked exports of 228,386 in FY’09 (129,060) with its Santro, Getz, i10 and i20 models compared to Maruti’s 54,099 units (34,399) in 2008-09 in which A-Star and Alto predominated.

Hyundai had previously launched Hyundai i10 which was a huge success in India. The Hyundai i20 is doing well too and Hyundai is all set to launch the Hyundai i20 Diesel. With skyrocketing petrol prices, the Hyundai i20 Diesel would be a welcome change. The diesel version of Hyundai i20 is being manufactured at its Chennai plant for exports. So far in India, Hyundai has marketed only the petrol variant.

While the federal government is handing out fistfuls of dollars to GM and Chrysler, they’re giving HoMoCo a hard time. Apparently, the US Patent & Trademark Office, specifically the Trademark Trial & Appeal Board (TTAB) is refusing to grant Acura the use of “Acura RL” as one mark. As you can see from the photos below (specimens 1 & 2), the space between “Acura” & “RL” is so great, that the TTAB is arguing that it leaves the impression that “Acura” & “RL” are two separate marks and can not be considered one.

Hyundai’s USA CEO John Krafcik has said that the company is looking at making ‘Genesis’ a sub-brand for its luxury car division. Having already spent $600 million to develop the brilliant Genesis sedan Hyundai now wants to take on Toyota’s Lexus and Honda’s Acura by making its own luxury car sub-brand. The Genesis brand of cars would be retailed from Hyundai showrooms but will have a dedicated section with different branding and a dedicated sales team. This will save the dealers millions of dollars which they would have spent if Hyundai wanted to open separate showrooms for the Genesis sub-brand.

Las Vegas, Nevada - These may be bad times for the auto industry, but have a look at how Hyundai is doing and you’d never know it. During a month when the industry was down 15.1 per cent from 2008, Hyundai’s March sales were up 25.5 per cent for the month and 25.3 per cent for the first quarter of 2009. During the same period Hyundai increased its share of the Canadian light vehicle market from 4.5 to 7.1 per cent. Include Kia - Hyundai’s sister company who is having a pretty good year itself - and the Koreans now have nearly 10 per cent of the Canadian market.
