Yokohama, Japan • Toyota and Nissan have promised shareholders this week they will do better to recover from the worst industry downturn in a generation, each focusing on different types of cleaner cars to steer their revival. Japan’s No.1 and No.3 automakers both face a second straight year of losses, reeling from a sharp sales slide in all major developed markets. The industry slump has already helped drive U.S. rivals General Motors and Chrysler into bankruptcy, and both Japanese automakers say they see no near-term relief.

Israel's cabinet on Sunday approved the nomination of Udi Nissan as budget director after a disagreement over the 2009 and 2010 budgets prompted his predecessor to quit. Nissan, 42, will take over on July 19, after the dual-year budgets are set to be approved by parliament, the Finance Ministry said in a statement. Nissan, is currently head of the Government Companies Authority, which is responsible for the privatization of state-owned firms.

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen test-drove a Nissan Motor Co. electric vehicle at the company's North American headquarters Wednesday, pledging the state's support in the automaker's effort to put the cars on the road soon.

The Renault–Nissan Alliance recently has signed an agreement with the Chinese government to sell electric cars in China in early 2011, following the government's incentives to promote the use of clean energy vehicles in the country, sources reported. Under the agreement, the Franco-Japanese alliance will provide the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) with an integrated marketing scheme for electric cars, which includes the establishment of a battery-charging network.
