The midsized sedan has been growing in all directions for decades, but soaring fuel prices have customers begging for something smaller. GM is heeding the call as it is preparing a smaller batch of next generation Saabs. The next 9-3 was originally slated to be underpinned by the Epsilon II, but in March GM decided to instead utilize the lower-medium Delta architecture.

After unsuccessful attempts by its GM masters to repackage vehicles in the form of the 9-7X (upscale Chevy TrailBlazer) and 9-2X (Subaru WRX clone), Saab is attempting to re-focus its brand's cachet by drawing on its core principles of quirky yet attractive styling, highly efficient turbocharged powertrains, and its distinct aerospace heritage.

Expansive blue skies set the scene for a perfect spring day in New England as an enthusiastic team from Saab greeted us journalist types and eagerly showed off the Swedish brand's newest top-level sedan, the TurboX. After a quick Powerpoint chat with Saab USA GM Steve Shannon and a stroll under a TurboX that was hoisted on a lift, we were making use of the Big Dig highway improvements on our way to several hours of blissful thrashing.

When Saab debuted the 9-X BioHybrid concept at the recent Geneva Motor Show, aerodynamics was a big part of the equation. The compact 9-X has a smooth, rounded nose, a raked back wrap-around windshield and a downward sloping roof. To help reduce the drag at the back end of the short body, a spoiler that wraps around the roof extends backward up to four inches. A new video featuring some of the designers talking about the aero work that they did has just been posted on the GMnext web site. You can check out the video after the jump.

This could be the most important new Saab in decades! Just unveiled here at Geneva, the 9X concept gives the strongest hint yet of the quirky Swedish firm's forthcoming premium compact hatch. Set to go head-to-head with the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3 and Volvo C30, the rakish 9X could revive the struggling company's fortunes. It's also packed with hi-tech features and will be able to lay claim to the title of most efficient car in the class. There's no doubting the Saab's style. At the front is a larger version of the familiar family grille, neat swept back headlamps and a distinctive wraparound windscreen. Smooth flanks with hidden door handles and mirrors replaced by rear-view cameras create what the designers call the 'fuselage look'.

This has to be the coolest concept we’ve ever seen! It’s a life-size replica of Saab’s Aero X Coupé, carved within the walls of the Icehotel in northern Sweden. The ice sculpture is part of an exhibition to promote the Scandinavian manufacturer.

To get the right ambience on the night it unveiled the Aero X at the Geneva auto show, Saab decided to surround the car in walls of giant ice blocks and trucked in 60 tons of the stuff from northern Sweden. It nearly didn't make it, as there was a disagreement about import duties when the trucks crossed the border into Switzerland. Geneva in late February is plenty cold, so why the big fuss over Swedish ice? Partly because it had the right balance of clarity and fissures, reminiscent of the etched and layered glass used in the lamps and instruments of the Aero X. But partly because Saab, a brand seemingly headed for oblivion a year ago, at last has fresh confidence in its Swedish identity and its independence.
