The Volkswagen Golf is the quintessential German car – practical, well-engineered and conservatively styled – but right-hand-drive versions of the car are currently sourced from a plant in Uitenhage on South Africa’s southern coast. For the next-generation Mark V1 model, VW will build all versions of the car, both left and right-hand-drive models at its hometown plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. To fill the gap at Uitenhage, VW will increase production of the in-demand Jetta sedan.

Taking a lesson from BMW, who have been successfully manufacturing cars and SUVs in Spartanburg, South Carolina for more than a decade, Audi may seek manufacturing capabilities for their A4 sedan and Q5 SUV in the States. The new Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, just announced last week, may be tasked with building upwards of 200,000 vehicles per year -- including the two Audis.

Despite the fact that Volkswagen's 2009 Jetta TDI sedan and Sportwagen cost more and have yet to get here, plus fuel prices in the five-dollar range, customer desire for the sparkless VeeDubs is running high. Perhaps buyers don't realize that these ain't the old Rabbit rattlers that cost three cents to run and would rack up a billion miles with five tanks of fuel.

The VW Beetle is a cult favorite here in the States, but in Germany, it's not so well loved. That could be part of the reason why Volkswagen has been slow to produce a successor to the new Beetle, but word from Motor Trend is that two models could be coming shortly. The first Beetle will be based off the Gen-VI Golf and will hit production in 2010 or 2011.

The Scirocco GT24 concept is a sister vehicle to the race cars which not only won their class at the recent Nürburgring 24 hour race but also finished 11th overall out of over 200 starters among far more exotic machinery. Sharing the same drivetrain, carbon panels and 325 PS 2.0-litre TSI engine the Scirocco GT24 adds a series of detail changes to the interior including leather bucket seats and a rear-facing camera to record the expression on the passenger’s face as the car races up the notorious Goodwood Hill.

What is the point in manufacturers spending millions of dollars on expensive advertising campaigns to launch their new models when they can just take a pre production prototype out on public roads during development and get places like WCF to advertise it for free. It certainly seems to be the case with the Volkswagen Robust Pick-up truck, we have seen this prototype out time and time again and even on video and here comes the latest shots (including interior photo) of the model whilst testing brakes and cooling system in the Alps.

German SUVs/crossovers galore! So many coming, you’d think a cross-dressing competition was going on! Volkswagen’s turn at the small SUV segment was thought to have ended with Tiguan. However from 2010 we may have to think again as the company plans its attack on the upcoming BMW X1/ MINI/ Corsa SUV brigade through the Polo SUV. This ain’t the Dune by the way, this is a proper SUV, well, a 4x4 one at any rate, that will use VW’s 4MOTION system. From the look of things VW is going back to its roots in that Audi will not have to worry about big brother poaching sales from it via yet another luxury line. Polo will be no rival to the A1.

VW normally likes to reserve performance models for the later half of their life cycle. So, the arrival of this supposed teaser raises an eye brow. The all new third generation Scirocco coupe will have its market launch this September in Europe. Unless VW has changed their R-Series strategy the arrival of this teaser seems quite early.

If you look back over the years, Volkswagens have been steadily marching toward the gaudy. We're not talking Sagrada Familia amazingness, but chromey, buck-toothed, overwrought fussiness. Walter Da'Silva is out to change all that by realigning Volkswagen design with its past. That doesn't mean that every VeeDub becomes a K.D.F Wagen throwback like the New Beetle, but certain proportions and themes from the historical portfolio will define the design language.

With retro rides – from the Fiat 500 to the Dodge Challenger – popping up left, right and center, it would be all to easy to forget the vehicle that started the trend: Volkswagen's New Beetle. Now with ten years on the road since introduction in 1998, the New Beetle is getting a little long in the tooth, but VW is preparing to launch its successor. However, while the current version is available only in two versions (coupe and cabrio), the next iteration may come with a few new twists in the lineup, mirroring the steadily-evolving range of variants of the MINI. That is, if the latest reports are to be believed.

Last year it became known that Apple and Volkswagen were in talks about the possibility of building an "iCar" that would be upgraded with a series of products from the producer of the omnipresent iPod. We’re not entirely sure whether or not these images from the latest issue of Autobild magazine are the result of a photoshop artist or if they are the real deal (less possible), but the iCar depicted here, sure looks like something that could have resulted from the cooperation between the two companies.

Germany's Spiegel Online is reporting that currency concerns will force Volkswagen to not sell the upcoming Mk VI Golf in the United States, Brazil, and Australia. It all boils down to profitability, and it appears that the forthcoming Golf simply cannot be sold in our market (or Brazil or Australia) in the current economic climate without falling short of VW's targets. Thus, Spiegel reports that VW boss Martin Winterkorn told a meeting of the board that the next Golf won't make an appearance here in the States, period. The original article (in German) is here, and any German-speaking readers are welcome to add clarity to the report in the comments below.

I admit it, I watch America's Next Top Model. It's not as good as Project Runway or So You Think You Can Dance, but seems to go through three seasons every year so there's always a new episode to watch. As with any reality show, ANTM is also produced in a number of foreign countries, including Germany, which has a good record of producing runway gals. One of its most successful, Heidi Klum, is the host of Germany's Next Top Model and she's also a spokeswoman for Volkswagen in one of the automaker's recent commercials.
